The Office of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (ORIC) organised a one-day workshop on grantsmanship for Early Career Researchers in UMaT. The workshop was held at De Kings Hotel on the 2nd March 2024. Participants were drawn from all the Departments of the University. In his opening remarks, Assoc Prof Micheal Affam, the Dean of the Office mentioned that the workshop was held to increase the capacity of researchers in the search of funding opportunities and writing of fundable proposals. He implored participants to take advantage of the opportunity to increase their competitiveness in garnering grants for their research works.

The resource persons for the workshop included Dr Emmanuel Effah, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Mrs Florence A. Aboh, Research and Innovation Manager, ORIC and Mr Leo Twum-Barimah, Account Office.
Mrs Florence A. Aboh made a presentation on the Grant Cycle and Analysing Funding Opportunities. She also took participants through practical steps to develop a research proposal using live funding opportunities.
Mr Leo Twum-Barimah’s presentation centred on types of budgets and budgetary items for research and other grants. He also touched on the need to observe principles of budgeting to attract the needed funding.

Dr Emmanuel Effah, through a presentation, also led a discussion on Practical Knowledge and Experience Sharing on Research Grants. He shed light on putting together a proposal that is innovative and has the potential to meet a need and advised participants to be guided by sustainable development goals when developing proposals. He also shared his experience with funding agencies on the implementation of projects and encouraged them to build their research portfolio to establish themselves on international platforms for their visibility and that of the University.

Mr Leo Twum-Barimah, Accounts Office The Dean, in his closing remarks, mentioned that the Office would continue to partner with the researchers through such training and other engagements to secure funding and build the University’s research and grants portfolio to enhance its ranking prospects. He encouraged participants to work with the Office to develop proposals and manage the resultant grants.
