UMaT Lecturers Participate in Trainers Training Programme in China

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Golden Dream Ghana Limited. and LiuGong Machinery Company Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate to train students in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on heavy-duty/earthmoving and construction machines to provide the needed human capital to support the mining, technology, and related industries in Ghana and West Africa. Courses in heavy-duty/earthmoving and construction machines will therefore be embedded in the Mechanical Engineering Programme at the University.

Classroom and practical sessions of the training

In furtherance of the understanding among the partners, a two-phase Trainers Training Programme aimed at enhancing the expertise of lecturers in heavy-duty and construction machinery to enable them impart practical skills and hands-on knowledge to students and other professionals in the mining, technology, and related industries in Ghana and West Africa has been organised.  The online training and subsequent on-site training in Liuzhou, China, included classroom sessions and hands-on experience with LiuGong equipment respectively, after which the lecturers were awarded the Certificate of Instructor Qualification.

UMaT, through this collaboration, becomes the only University in Africa to partner the Chinese multinational equipment manufacturing giant in skills training in the area of heavy-duty/earthmoving and construction machines. The partnership strengthens ties between academia and industry, fostering cross-cultural experiences and setting the stage for more future collaboration to help achieve the long-term goals of the University.

LiuGong is the world’s 10th-largest construction equipment manufacturer by market share and the world’s largest manufacturer of wheel loaders.
