UMaT ORGANISES HACKATHON FOR STUDENT INNOVATORS TO OBSERVE GHANA DIGITAL INNOVATION WEEK

UMaT has organised Student Innovators Hackathon in collaboration with Ghana Hubs Network as part of activities to observe Ghana Digital Innovation Week. The event took place on 30th November 2021 at the UMaT Business Incubation Hub under the theme: Transforming UMaT with Digital Innovations.

The Innovators had the opportunity to pitch their innovative ideas aimed at addressing challenges in academic departments and offices in UMaT.  The Innovators were taken through design thinking after the presentation of the challenges identified at the departments and offices.

Four (4) groups consisting six to ten (6-10) people in a group with each group having at least one lady as a member participated in the hackathon.

The groups were:

  1. Team Wonder
  2. Team Wakanda
  3. Team Masco
  4. Team Alpha

The problems included the following:

  1. Student Dues Payment system
  2. Hostel Complaint Management System
  3. Academic Tutoring and Counselling System
  4. Library Archive System for Projects
  5. Research Archiving and Peer Review System

The students hacked on the above digital systems after which they pitched their solutions. A panel of judges comprising Dr Felix Aryeh, Mr. Ernest Adadzie and Mr. Kobina Abaka-Paintsil considered the solutions and gave their verdict.

At the end of the programme, Team Wonder came first, Team Alpha took the second position and Team Wakanda placed third.

The Ghana Digital Innovation Week (GDIW) was organised in Accra to stimulate innovation among the Ghanaian citizenry to showcase innovative discoveries and build a movement to connect with innovators within the ecosystem. The big picture of the Innovation Week was to see GDIW beyond series of week-long activities as a catalyst to the bigger innovation ecosystem in the long term. GDIW emerged as one of the key highlights of the trilateral co-operation programme among Ghana, Germany and Israel to increase collaboration and build synergies in various areas of development.  The Ghana Digital Innovation Week is a platform to celebrate the accomplishments of Ghana’s digital innovation ecosystem and build momentum towards a common vision for its future development. The goal is to mobilize diverse digital innovation ecosystem stakeholders towards more collaborative and inclusive ecosystem development.
